Memorial damage worse than thought

On March 22 2006 the Crewe Chronicle reports that the war memorial, which has now been moved, has definitely been extensively damaged.

'There is no suggestion the move caused the damage. It has occurred over a long period of time.' says "Jim Brown, manager of Gillespies, which is the company behind the square's redesign." The story contains no quotes from protestors, witnesses of the January move attempt (see below Jan 11 2006 story) or critics of the move. The memorial will be out of sight for "several months to come" it now appears.

Memorial move is halted (Jan 11 2006)

"Campaigners . . . looked on in horror as men clambered up ladders to drill into the base of Britannia after cracks were noticed in the folds of her robes by onlookers. [. . .] Work was finally called off, and cranes sent away, when the specialist team found steel pins holding the statue to the base. [. . .]
Site manager Phil Bailiff said: 'We are aware this is a sensitive issue and while the drilling into the statue did look dramatic, the holes can be repaired. He added: 'In this instance the 80 year-old original drawings were not available and work had to be postponed when steel plugs were found holding the statue to the plinth. 'The crane will be back tomorrow when we hope the operation will go smoothly.'"

Work to move war memorial imminent

CONTRACTORS will begin the delicate process of moving Crewe's war memorial by the middle of next month.

Experts have begun a careful assessment of the 80-year-old monument as they try to work out the safest way to go about the move from Market Square.

Officials at Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council say every precaution is being taken to avoid damage to the memorial, and believe the process could take six to eight weeks.

Town centre update work begins

"Steven Hogben, the council's deputy leader, said: 'We are very much looking forward to moving on with this work, which is an integral part of our vision for a more vibrant Crewe.

'Great care has been taken to deal with the relocation of the war memorial in a sensitive and respectful way. '

A spokesman for the Veterans' Group, which includes members of the RAF Association, Royal Naval Association, Women's Royal Army Corps, Royal British Legion, Royal Engineers and local historians, said: 'It has been a difficult time but, after considerable thought and planning, we are confident the memorial will get the consideration, care and attention it deserves.' "
